HARDER SAYS WATCH FOR GROW-OPS

In light of last week's fire at a marijuana grow-op in the Merivale/Fallowfield neighbourhood, Councillor Jan Harder suggests you check out any suspicious houses in your area.

"Marijuana growing operations steal millions of dollars of electricity every year and they are fire hazards," said the Bell-South Nepean councillor, "as well as doing terrible damage to a house from the high humidity and structural changes necessary to grow a cash crop."

Use the following list of grow-op warning signs, advises the Councillor, a list distributed by a citizens committee in Bells Corners, where four grow houses were shut down in Lynwood Village in the last year.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

New neighbours move in with very little furniture.

Windows and draperies are always closed.

Little or no garbage is put out.

A new entry door is built from the garage into the house.

There is an unusual amount of vehicular traffic.

People enter and exit the house only through the garage with the garage door closed.

People arrive, put out the garbage, cut the lawn and leave.

Councillor Harder advises that if you suspect a house in your neighbourhood of growing marijuana, contact Constable Ray Lamarre, Ottawa Police Services at 236-1222, ext.  2149 or the Councillor's office at 580-2473.
